“In 1979 I went alpine climbing. One of the routes I was most keen on was Skyladder on Mt Andromeda. The weather was terrible on the icefields that summer. We did the long approach half a dozen times only to back off. Finally we threw in the towel and went off to the Bugaboos. The years went by. Skyladder had slipped off the tick list onto the bucket list.
Then, earlier this year, 41 summers later, I met Ian. During a crevasse rescue refresher the Mt Andromeda fiasco came up in conversation. Moments later Skyladder was back on the tick list! The next morning, at 2am or so, we left Golden and drove to the Icefields. We hit absolutely perfect weather, snow and ice conditions. The climb lived up to 40 years of anticipation. Ian shepherded me up the route (and down the long descent) like the true professional he is. Thanks Ian!”
